Offres d'emploi
Our international staff totalling 560 is recruited mainly from the countries of our funding partners.
The majority of staff is recruited on a permanent contract basis with a probation period between 3 and 6 months. This is however not applicable for Scientists, Postdoctoral Fellows, Thesis Students, and Trainees.
- Administrative staff
Most of administrative staff is recruited within our Administration Division (Finance Service, Personnel Service and Purchasing Unit).
However, it can also be recruited in our Technical, Machine, Computing, Experiments divisions and Directorate. - Computing staff
Computing staff designs, develops and maintains the ESRF computing architecture and is in charge of: a central computing facility comprising of a compute- and file server cluster with several Terabyte disk arrays for data storage/handling, office and laboratory automation with hundreds of PC based workstations, a management information system based on the latest IT, Intranet, and Internet technologies, high speed networks covering the whole ESRF site with some 80 subnetworks and some 1800 active nodes, data acquisition read-out systems on experimental
beamlines, control systems for the whole accelerator plant and all beamlines.
Staff works with computer aided design tools for software engineering, as well as with mechanical and digital electronic design. In the very fast moving field of computing, the ESRF aims to stay abreast with the latest IT technologies, and thus offers a challenging environment for computer literates. - Technical staff
The accelerator system comprises a 200 MeV electron linac, a 6 GeV fast cycling booster synchrotron and the 6 GeV storage ring, operated 24hrs/day for the production of X-rays.
Teams of scientists, engineers, and technicians work permanently to achieve the best possible performance of the source and the X-ray beamlines using the most recent technologies in the various disciplines involved : Physics (magnetism, electron beam dynamics, radio-frequency, optics, detectors ...), electronics, computer science, mechanics, ultra high vacuum systems, power converters, ... - Research staff
The ESRF supports scientists in the implementation of fundamental and applied research on the structure of condensed matter in fields such as Physics, Chemistry,
Crystallography, Earth Science, Biology and Medicine, Surface and Materials Science.
Scientists (level of qualifications: PhD) are as a general rule appointed for a fixed-term period of up to 5 years.
The post doctorate programme of the ESRF aims to allow young scientists from the international scientific community to acquire knowledge on the use of synchrotron radiation by participating in the running of the beamlines and in their associated research programmes. Post-doctoral fellows are appointed for a period of two years, extendable to 3 years.
PhD Students: the ESRF supports research projects related to the use of synchrotron radiation (SR) or to synchrotron/storage ring technology. In general projects will be proposed by the ESRF. However, applications from students or supervisors at universities with research projects of their own are also possible: - Projects on SR related science (chemistry, biology, materials science, engineering etc.) should involve the actual application of SR or the development of theories to account for SR data.
- Projects on synchrotron/storage ring technology require the design or development of new sources or beamline components.
- Projects in computing could involve either science (as in data and interpretation) or technology (as in data acquisition) or both.
- Projects in theory could also straddle science and technology.
As a general rule, Ph.D. students are employed on a special fixed term contract, "Contrat de Formation par la Recherche" (CFR). The grant is initially awarded for a 2-year period normally extended to 3 years. - Salary
The annual salary scales are normally within the range of : - 30 - 54 KE for scientists,
- 24 - 50 KE for engineers and for executive officers in administration,
- 20 - 32 KE for technicians,
- 18 - 30 KE for general staff depending on experience and qualifications.
The level at which staff are appointed is based upon their qualifications and experience and the level of responsability of the post.
- Allowances
In addition to the basic salary, the ESRF pays the following allowances according to entitlement:
o an expatriation allowance for staff recruited from outside of France under certain conditions of residence, - A family allowance if the staff member has two or more dependent children,
- An education allowance for non-French staff members receiving an expatriation allowance and who send their dependent child(ren) to school in their home country.
For staff members recruited from outside the Grenoble area to permanent contracts or scientists with contracts of more than 3 years duration, the ESRF will (under certain conditions) pay:
- An installation allowance : the amount depends on the individual's family situation.
- An adaptation allowance depending upon the place of residence prior to recruitment, the individual's family situation and the type of contract.
- Recruitment contact :
Elizabeth Moulin or Bénédicte Henry Canudas
